We were presented with the challenge to create an icon set for a national park. I chose the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. I was encouraged to explore different methods and styles to capture the essence of the park.
When I started working on the sketches for these icons I searched for pictures of the park to help me get a better idea of the scenery. I chose keywords to help influence my designs. I was influenced by stickers you would buy at the gift shop of a national park.  At the same time, I really enjoy the look and aesthetic of vintage posters. I incorporated some imagery common in the most beautiful scenes from my research, and colors from the landscape.
Part of my concept was to have a set of icons that told a story. Each icon is set at a different time of day inside the park, highlighting the natural beauty of the park in different ways, and giving examples of activities available. The mountains in the background of the icons line up to make a continuous range when viewed side by side, reinforcing the theme of a story taking place.
With these icons, I hope to inspire interest in the park and give an idea to the audience of the character and landscape of such a beautiful place.
